Hardware: Random Access Memory (RAM)

I bet we all heard the word “RAM” right? lets find out more about it.

Random Access Memory (RAM) gives space for your PC to makes it read and write data so it could be used by the CPU (Central Processing Unit).

When you add more ram to your PC, you will reduce the amount of times your CPU that must to read data from your HDD ( Hard Disk Drive). This will make your PC work much faster, as RAM is many times faster than a hard disk drive(HDD).

RAM is volatile, so data stored in RAM stays there only as long as your computer is running. As soon as you turn the computer off, the data stored in RAM disappears.

Types of RAM’s

1.SDRAM / Dynamic Random Access Memory

2.DDR / Double Data Rate

3.DDR2 / Double Data Rate two

4.DDR3 / Double Data Rate three

SDRAM: Typical SDR SDRAM clock rates are 66, 100, and 133 MHz (15, 10, and 7.5 ns/cycle). Clock rates up to 150 MHz were available for performance enthusiasts.

DDR: running at 100Mhz, 133Mhz, 166Mhz, 200Mhz, 233Mhz, or 266Mhz. What makes this separate from current SDRAM is that DDR can transfer memory on both the rise and the fall of a clock cycle. So, essentially, you are getting 200Mhz, 266Mhz, 333Mhz, 400Mhz, 466Mhz, or 533Mhz therespectively.

DDR2: running at 266Mhz, 337Mhz, 375Mhz, 400Mhz, and 450Mhz. So, essentially, you are getting 533Mhz, 675Mhz, 750Mhz, 800Mhz, and 900Mhz respectively.

DDR3: running at 533Mhz, 666Mhz, and 800Mhz which provides a total speed of 1066Mhz, 1333Mhz, and 1600Mhz.( They made a new RAM at PC-1000/1250Mhz)

Q: How can I read RAM’s speed?
