from the last 3 years LCD’s becoming so famous since they are getting cheaper and cheaper, and people still don’t know how to compare between Plasma and LCD, Basically LCD’s come from 2-inches till 40+ inches; and Plasma comes from 32-inches till 150-inches. Okay so what’s the difference is it that only LCD comes in smaller sizes? the answer is no. there is many difference between Plasma and LCD.
Why Plasma?
If you’re serious about a BIG home theater, plasma is pretty much the way to go with a flat screen television. Plasmas offer a number of advantages, including:
- Better Blacks- When a plasma pixel is off, there’s no light at all (LCDs have a backlight)- this produces a darker, more realistic black. This leads to…
- Better Contrast- The pictures looks sharper and more lifelike.
- Better Pixel Response Time- If you’re watching the big game, you don’t need to see blur or artifacts, plasmas are great at showing fast action.
- Colors- LCDs are good, they can show millions of colors. Plasmas are better, they can show BILLIONS!!.
Why Not Plasma?
You need to match the tech to the requirement. Looking for a car or kitchen TV? That’s going to be LCD because plasma isn’t made in those smaller sizes yet. There’s also a couple of circumstances where LCD performs better:
- Really bright rooms. The backlight allows a slightly better picture under bright lights/glare
- Mounting constraints- LCDs are lighter, a large plasma really does require professional installation if you mount it on/in a wall.
- High altitude performance- LCDs aren’t affected by altitude where plasma performance can show some degradation.
So what’s the difference between Plasma and LCD ?
Plasma LCD
- Latency: not applicable -exists
- Contrast: excellent -acceptable
- Brightness: better than best CRT’s -not better than Plasma
- Color quality: Better than CRT, but flickering present -no flickering; blacks not deep
- Consumption: 250W for a 42-inches -150W fir a 42-inches
- Viewing angels: Better than LCD,wider -not wider than Plasma.
- Display Size: from 32-inches – from 2-inches
- Price: still high compared to CRT’s -still high compared to CRT’s
- Life expectancy: 20.000 hrs. -expectancy: 40.000 hrs.
- Defective pixels : rare -possible
Let’s compare between Plasma and LCD performance.
LCD got a problem with the depth of black colors, which means it doesn’t show the black color so clearly.
Example:

Right screen is Plasma and left is LCD, if you pay attention to the LCD you can see like a backlight and not truly black color more likely blue, They still working on it and it gets more better and better. but it still does exist.
